HISTORY

Built in Holland as a freight sailing vessel in 1918. In 1923, converted to a coastal motor ship to travel the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. In 1978, the ship was acquired by ist present owner unter the name „Saturn“. The name was changed to „Joseph Conrad“ as the owner has a special affinity to the famous writer Joseph Conrad, who had sailed the seas as a captain for decades before he finally found his calling as a writer at over 40 years. The owner began to restor the ship again into a sailing yacht. The inner ship, the technology and all structures all underwent complete reconstruction. The rigging was designed as a top sail gaff schooner according to old tradition. The Amsterdam Museum Wharft was in charge of the redesign. The masts, 25 m high and of Oregon wood, were specially imported from Canada.

Once more, the reconstructed rigging was completely altered in 1991, this time by the worldfamous sailmaker Elvström. With the new rigging, the ship achieves optimum sailing power. The original mast was maintained as jib-boom on the ship until today. From 1921 to 1978, it had served as signalling mast.
